BMW introduced the fourth generation 3 Series in 1999. Based on the entirely new E46 automobile platform, the new model was available in several body styles, including a station wagon configuration (Touring). Due to the fact that BMW was not a real contender on the station wagon sector in the United States, all models here (called BMW 3 Series Sport Wagon) came with a single engine configuration, the 2.5L 6-cylinder inline delivering 192 hp. The new model featured increased leg room and interior space compared to its previous generation Touring, while also benefiting from a few styling changes: new tailgate with integrated rear-spoiler, redesigned rear-side windows and plenty of new interior storage areas. Another novelty on the 3 Series Touring was BMW’s newly designed steptronic transmission, available with all powerplants. Its on-road performances included a 0-60 mph sprint in almost 8 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph.
