BMW introduced a new 3-door compact version of the 3 Series model in 2001. Designed to challenge the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Sport Coupe and Audi A3 on the small-hatch sector, this car featured the same suspension, engines and transmissions as the E46 saloon model and came with a choice of four variants. Its top-of-the-range 325 Ti (190-hp 2.5L engine) was mated to a SSG clutchless manual transmission. Other new features on the 3 Series Compact – available for other body styles also – included ABS with Cornering Brake Control (CBC), traction control, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and 6 airbags. Another notable feature was the rounded headlights which made it unique among other BMWs.
